My High School Graduation Quilt

1 min read

My mom had just learned a new... pattern, embroidery, craft, skill... called Chicken Scratch.

She used gingham fabric to make a star pattern. On the medium color squares, make one stitch one way and then another way. Wrapped the thread under those stitches to highlight the white squares. On the dark squares, stitch stars using the white thread. Stitch stars around the pattern using a thread color that matches the gingham. On the gingham, the white blocks now stand out from the rest of the squares. The dark blocks have the stars so that soften the color differences.

When I looked the pattern up on the internet, because I couldn't remember what it was called, I see that there are lots of patterns that you can make with these "stitches".

My quilt was made with yellow gingham. She also made my siblings quilts using the same pattern but different colors.

After receiving my graduation quilt gift, my mom taught me this pattern. I remember her stating that you have to make sure the little blocks are in squares and not rectangles.

Yes, I used this quilt on my bed for months. It is well used and well loved.
