A Quilt for my Mother-in-law
Within the first year or two of being married, I made this quilt for my mother-in-law. I found the pattern in an old magazine that I had been given. I don't remember the name of the magazine or the proper name of the pattern. All I remember is the pattern had the name "rose" in it. I used scrap pieces of pink and red material for the flower patterns. (I know. Some of the shades that I chose show the pattern of the petals more than others.) After we gave her the quilt, sh

Seasonal Plates
My mom dabbled in ceramics for a bit. She even had a kiln for a while. I could not even start in this post all the items she made. At one point, she painted a set of seasonal plates and gave them to her mom as a Christmas gift. I don't remember what year it was. But I do remember the plates being displayed on the grandma's kitchen wall. When grandma passed away, mom received the plates back. She displayed them on her kitchen wall till she passed. That is when they becam

The ABC Quilt
I started working on this baby quilt before I was pregnant with my son. I started embordering the letters and a picture on scrap squares of solid colors. As I was choosing the fabric color and the letter, I considered the picture I would use. I wanted to be able to see and understand each picture. I did not succeed. While working on the D close up, I could see what the letter was. Everything looked good. But after looking at it from afar, not so much. As you can see,

A quilt my mom made
I don't know much about this quilt. I know my mom made it when we were young. Attached is both a picture of the full quilt and a close-up of her hand stitching. The colors always made me think of Christmas. But I don't know if that was the look she was trying to represent. I do have a story though. We grew up on a small farm, out in the country, outside of a small town. My mom was hand quilting quilts for others as a way to make some extra money. My mom's sister lived th

My High School Graduation Quilt
My mom had just learned a new... pattern, embroidery, craft, skill... called Chicken Scratch. She used gingham fabric to make a star pattern. On the medium color squares, make one stitch one way and then another way. Wrapped the thread under those stitches to highlight the white squares. On the dark squares, stitch stars using the white thread. Stitch stars around the pattern using a thread color that matches the gingham. On the gingham, the white blocks now stand out f

My First Quilt
I made my first quilt while I was in high school. I am using the word "made" loosely because the front is one piece of material. My mom's cousin knew of a place that sold fabric by the pound. Now remind you, this was many moons ago, so I don't know if the place even exists anymore. Most of the material was the end pieces, leftovers, cut offs from the factory that made clothing and bedding. Yep, mom made some quilts and crafts that had sweatpants material or drapery mater

Almost Christmas '25
We are just a few days away from Christmas, so I thought I would introduce one of my Christmas decorations. I have made several items to use for Christmas decorations. The small wall hanging with the fabric yo-yos, in the shape of, and decorated to look like a Christmas tree, tends to be my favorite. My aunt had a pillow on her couch that had fabric yo-yos on the front. I was in the process of making one when I realized most of the colors I was choosing were green. It was

My Mom
My mom was always making something. there are lots of pictures of our younger selves where me and my siblings were wearing clothes that our mom had made. The left-over material could be found in the next quilt. There were discussions about who a quilt belonged to when it was finished. Whoever had more blocks made from material pieces of their clothes tended to have laid claim to the quilt. I remember overhearing mom telling someone that, "the kids could all be outside pla

Mamaw's theme quilt
I think I will pause the history for a moment and write about the quilt that I am using as my theme. My son asked us over for supper one day. We sat on the couch while we were eating, and he started a movie to watch. As we sat watching, my son says, "We are going to have one of those." and continued to eat his food. In the movie, there was a baby. It took us a moment to realized what he said. "Wait. What?" Congratulations followed. So, now I know I will be making a baby

My Paternal Grandmother (my dad's mom)
I never really knew this grandma to make quilts. I knew she owned handmade quilts. But never thought too much about her being the one who made them. I know she knew how to make quilts because she made me a quilt. She knew my favorite color is green, so the color palette was shades of green. Or the leaves of the flowers were green on some of the fabric. Her cooking, on the other hand was awesome. LOVED her beef and noodles. I know there are many recipes out there, but he

My Maternal Grandma (my mom's mom)
My Grandma lived in the mountains of Kentucky. The fabric she used to make quilts was left over scraps from clothing that she made or fabrics that her daughters brought to her. The block patterns were usually simple. But sometimes there was a quilt with more complexity. Grandma had seven children with my mom being the next to youngest. Grandma had made so many quilts that when we were all gathered for the holidays, everyone could sleep under a handmade quilt. When Grandma

Scrap quilt
Quilt I made for my uncle for what would have been his 50-year wedding anniversary. My aunt had passed away before the anniversary date. I was a flower girl in their wedding. I thought I was about six or seven years old. A few years ago, we were on vacation with my uncle, his daughter (my cousin) and her husband. It was about the time of what I thought was the fifty-year anniversary date. My husband played sly and questioned my uncle about his wedding. Found out I was c

Welcome
Welcome to Mamaw's Quilts and Crafts. I sew, quilt, craft, bead, and crochet. I have knitted, cross-stitched, embroidered, and plastic canvas. I also have made scrapbook pages, fairy gardens and tile coasters. But I always come back to making quilts. I am a quilt maker from the third generation in my family. I will be sharing stories about our family's quilting journey, accompanied by pictures and tips. Interwoven with these stories will be crafts and patterns, both modern
